My name is Karla Reale and I have worked with young people in a long and varied career, for the past 20 years in the Rushmoor and Hart districts. I have a qualification in youth and community work and training as a drug, alcohol and sexual health worker.
My work has mainly been around the more challenging aspects of young peoples' behaviour and I was a Drug and Alcohol worker for many years, worked in drop-in centre's for homeless young people and with young people leaving Local Authority care.
Homelessness is a sad reality of many young people’s lives, through various factors that are sometimes of their own making and sometimes not and I have worked extensively with young people who are at their lowest point, in finding a safe place to live. This involves working closely with Local authorities, charities and other agencies involved in housing. Negotiation, persuasion and a sheer dogged determination are needed for that role.
The benefit system can be a maze of pitfalls, bureaucracy and at Fleet Phoenix we intend to give young people the support, guidance and confidence to deal with these aspects of their lives and I am pleased that I have been invited to be part of what is a very experienced team who care passionately about young people, who are our future.
I am currently working as a voluntary outreach worker at an academy where I am mentoring young people in danger of being excluded, bullied, or experiencing personal and/or family issues.
